 Sky closes on 10 million subs and 3 million for HD |

Sky is on target to win more than 10 million subscribers and three million HD by the end of 2010.
Its TV, broadband and phone services contributed to profits of more than a billion Pounds over the past year.
At the end of June, Sky had 9.86 million subscribers, with one fifth using its TV, broadband and phone services.
Sky+HD showed the fastest growth, adding 429,000 subs in three months to reach 2.94 million.
The results coincide with news of the launch of Sky 3D in October, and an exclusive deal to distribute HBO's TV archive and new shows in the UK, while Sky Anytime+ is set to launch by the end of the year.
Sky chief executive Jeremy Darroch said: 'High definition goes from strength to strength, with more than twice as many customers as a year ago.
'At the same time, customers are choosing broader bundles of services, with one in five now taking all three of TV, broadband and telephony. Overall, customers are taking 45 per cent more additional subscription products than a year ago.
'A multi-year partnership will make Sky the exclusive home of new HBO programming and we're looking forward to a new slate of original UK comedy on Sky1 HD and the launch of 3D TV to residential customers
'The recent acquisition of the Living TV Group will help us to broaden our entertainment offering still further in the future.'
Sky spends around £339 in marketing and other costs to win each new subscriber, and makes an average of £508 a year from every subscriber.

Virgin Media Player launches beta for PC and mobile |

Virgin has launched the beta test of its rival to Sky Player - the Virgin Media Player - via broadband and mobile.
The VMP is free to top-tier XL TV subscribers with Virgin broadband, while pay-monthly mobile users get a free hour of access per day.
The broadband service will have hundreds of hours of TV from ITV, Living, Disney, Cartoon Network, National Geographic, MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon.
But Virgin's latest deal with Sky means it will also be able to offer Sky channels on the player, with a full launch later this year.
Cindy Rose, executive director of digital entertainment at Virgin Media said: 'We continue to explore innovative new ways to bring our customers' favourite content to them and, with Virgin Media Player, we're making sure they're spoilt for choice.'
The mobile service features special versions of shows from 4oD, mobile channel MTV Snax with bite-sized versions of MTV shows like Cribs and The Hills, and music video channel MTV Music.

Sky buys up HBO series |

Sky has signed a deal with HBO giving it exclusive rights to new series from the US broadcaster.
The first series to be aired under the deal will be Martin Scorsese's Prohibition-era drama Boardwalk Empire, starring Steve Buscemi and Kelly Macdonald.
Also showing on Sky as part of the deal is fantasy drama A Game of Thrones, based on the best-selling 'A Song of Ice and Fire' sequence by George R.R Martin.
HBO's upcoming slate also includes horse-racing drama Luck, executive produced by Heat director Michael Mann and written by Deadwood creator David Milch.
HBO's archive of programming, including The Sopranos, Six Feet Under and The Wire, will be made available through Sky's on-demand platforms, including the upcoming Anytime+ service.

Sky 3D launching October 1 |

Sky has announced it will launch its full 3D channel for the home on October 1.
Programming will include coverage of Premier League football and Ryder Cup and a selection of films.
Bolt and Monsters vs Aliens will be shown during the launch weekend with Alice in Wonderland; Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs; Coraline; Fly Me To The Moon, Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince and My Bloody Valentine set to follow before Christmas. More programming 'spanning entertainment and the arts' is to be announced.
Available free to subscribers with a Sky World subscription and HD pack, Sky 3D is currently broadcasting a demo reel on channel number 217 and can be watched using any 3D-ready TV with glasses and Sky+ HD.
Jeremy Darroch, Sky's Chief Executive, said: "As with high definition, 3D is set to transform the way TV is enjoyed in homes nationwide. Following hot on the heels of the success of 3D cinema, Sky customers will now be the first anywhere in Europe to experience 3D TV from the comfort of their living rooms. They can look forward to a fantastic mix of live sport, blockbuster movies, and innovative entertainment and arts shows."

Virgin looks forward to TiVo and more HD channels |

Virgin is promising more HD channels and a TiVo PVR by the end of 2010 as it grows to 3.7m TV customers.
The cable service added 22,300 TV homes in the traditionally slow quarter from April to June,and now makes an average of £551 per year from each subscriber.
It also upgraded 259,000 homes to HD, making a total 1.2m homes able to watch HD - 32 per cent of its TV subs.
Chief executive Neil Berkett said: 'We continue to work with TiVo to develop and launch a new converged TV and broadband interactive platform in the fourth quarter.
'We are also continuing to aggressively expand our High Definition (HD) offering. A year ago, we carried one HD channel, but this will increase to a total of 26 channels in the next few weeks.'
On-demand TV viewing is also growing at Virgin, with 58 per cent of customers watching VoD at least once a month, and an average of 18 on-demand viewings per home every month.
